Either the user can't sell them, or the user still needs them. The first case implies a niche for an aggressive software remarketing effort at the retail level. The wholesale market for used Apple /// software is gone. Individuals still want software that others probably want to sell. A program to buy used software from individuals for resale might be worthwhile. That a user still needs his or her "old" software may be due to inability to coalyst or to add new interpreters. :h4.New Functions As with the program-specific suggestions, the respondents came up with a variety of suggestions. It is at best unlikely that anyone will develop a major new application like dBase III for the Apple ///. Two Catalyst-related suggestions fall into this category. PFS can be installed under Catalyst, but only Version B02 et seq. Unprotected run-time versions of Catalyst are in the public domain. Copy protected full systems are now needed only to install Cater file to print a multi-column document. Other suggestions imply that available information isn't getting disseminated. One VisiCalc owner wished for enhancements that exist as VisiCalc Advanced. Merge /// answers the wish for a mail/merge PFS interface.ed program, but they might lead to new software. Backup /// isn't going to be gentler on the user, but it has yielded howls of pain from folks who can program a superior replacement. Add-on functions are possible, too. A new program might use an Apple Writile structures to allow special purpose programming against those data bases. Currently active software houses will certainly consider suggestions related to Power Keys, Desktop Manager, etc. Some program specific suggestions may not happen to the specific Wish Lists There are some well reasoned suggestions for improving specific programs. There should be some way to interface the SANE (Standard Apple Numeric Environment) library with languages other than Pascal. Someone may decode the PFS and KeyStroke fld be worthwhile. One person's "least used" program could be another's "most desired" program. A used software brokerage could do well by getting those people together, much as a college bookstore does well in the used textbook market. :h4.Program Specifiwith previous surveys showing that Apple /// owners are users of software rather than programmers. Why do those people have programming languages? The list of least used software further confirms the suspicion that a retail software remarketing effort couEasy Pieces were actually upgraded to the level of Appleworks 2.0, the "upgrade" and "new purchase" markets seem to be there. Many survey respondents own programming languages. Most report that those languages are gathering dust, a situation that squares e ground for future software developments. It is one of the most owned programs, and it is the most used. A thousand people pre-placed orders to ON THREE in the hope of an upgrade to the program. That is a striking level of response to "vaporware." If /// that 1981 program had any trade-in value, and if its proprietary file format could be painlessly converted to something else, then perhaps vendors would see less resistance. :h4.Most and Least Used Software /// Easy Pieces is potentially the most fertil may be a niche for a file conversion service. The large number of programs already owned could explain the resistance seen by vendors to new program offerings. A 1981 program can still do today exactly what it did when it emerged from its shrink wrap. Ifion software. Users may not know of file conversion software, much of which is in the public domain. An information program could address that problem. Even if they are aware, users may well not be comfortable with doing file conversions themselves. Therenvert one proprietary file format to another. If a person has a significant CRUDFILE data base, he or she will doubtless not wish to re-type all its data into WONDERWORKS format, even if the latter is otherwise superior. Respondents own little file convers Software-based Apple //e emulation may not be possible. One also doubts that a native-code compiler will be written for Pascal or C, but someone just might develop a program to convert a Pascal/C "codefile" into native code. Again, some suggestions imply that users are not getting the word. One such is the desire to interface with MS-DOS files. DA DataSystems filled that need with its PC-Disk 400 system. The system was advertised and well reviewed. Sales were so low that the product was discontinued. MKWhy would the average user have several word processors or spread sheets? MKThis seems to indicate that users have sought improved capabilities as new PNprograms have become available. If so, and if the average user is not a pack NLrat, the older programs are still owned for one of two reasons. Either the PNuser can't sell them, or the user still needs them. The first case implies a PNniche foht use an 5Apple Writer file to print a multi-column document.CAOther suggestions imply that available information isn't getting JHdisseminated. One VisiCalc owner wished for enhancements that exist as FDVisiCalc Advanced. Merge /// answers the ecified program, but PNthey might lead to new software. Backup /// isn't going to be gentler on the OMuser, but it has yielded howls of pain from folks who can program a superior PNreplacement. Add-on functions are possible, too. A new program migctures to allow special purpose programming MKagainst those data bases. Currently active software houses will certainly JHconsider suggestions related to Power Keys, Desktop Manager, etc. Some LJprogram specific suggestions may not happen to the spare some well reasoned suggestions for improving specific programs.IGThere should be some way to interface the SANE (Standard Apple Numeric MKEnvironment) library with languages other than Pascal. Someone may decode MKthe PFS and KeyStroke file strust used" PNprogram could be another's "most desired" program. A used software brokerage NLcould do well by getting those people together, much as a college bookstore (does well in the used textbook market.PROGRAM SPECIFIC WISH LISTSKThere ners are users of software rather than programmers. Why do those $people have programming languages?OMThe list of least used software further confirms the suspicion that a retail NLsoftware remarketing effort could be worthwhile. One person's "lea0, the FD"upgrade" and "new purchase" markets seem to be there. Many survey OMrespondents own programming languages. Most report that those languages are NLgathering dust, a situation that squares with previous surveys showing that PNApple /// owms, and it is the most used.OMA thousand people pre-placed orders to ON THREE in the hope of an upgrade to MKthe program. That is a striking level of response to "vaporware." If /// IGEasy Pieces were actually upgraded to the level of Appleworks 2.Lpainlessly converted to something else, then perhaps vendors would see less resistance.MOST & LEAST USED SOFTWAREMK/// Easy Pieces is potentially the most fertile ground for future software Odevelopments. It is one of the most owned progra the resistance seen JHby vendors to new program offerings. A 1981 program can still do today JHexactly what it did when it emerged from its shrink wrap. If that 1981 NLprogram had any trade-in value, and if its proprietary file format could be Ngram could address that KIproblem. Even if they are aware, users may well not be comfortable with FDdoing file conversions themselves. There may be a niche for a file conversion service.OMThe large number of programs already owned could explaine-type all its data into WONDERWORKS format, IGeven if the latter is otherwise superior. Respondents own little file PNconversion software. Users may not know of file conversion software, much of LJwhich is in the public domain. An information pro resale might be worthwhile. That a user still needs his PNor her "old" software may be due to inability to convert one proprietary file NLformat to another. If a person has a significant CRUDFILE data base, he or OMshe will doubtless not wish to rr an aggressive software remarketing effort at the retail level. The PNwholesale market for used Apple /// software is gone. Individuals still want NLsoftware that others probably want to sell. SUMMARYNLThis survey has provided baseline knowledge of the present and guidance for HFthe future of Apple /// software. Apple /// owners have a variety of NLapplications software, oSuper Serial Card and the NLUnidisk drivers. Others can be written. People have experimented with the PNBSR X-10 controller for home security applications, and that project may bear Ifruit. Something like the Calendar module of The Desktop Managetem was advertised and well reviewed. Sales MKwere so low that the product was discontinued. Some suggestions are quite LJpossible. The Apple /// Tip Book awaits only an author and a publisher. NLDrivers for Apple II peripherals exist. Note the o convert a Pascal/C "codefile" into native code. Again, some JHsuggestions imply that users are not getting the word. One such is the OMdesire to interface with MS-DOS files. DA DataSystems filled that need with OMits PC-Disk 400 system.
