That's right - literally ALL Apple IIs - from the Plus on up to the GS and any version of the /// - can and do have the ability to surf the Internet. It's not as pretty af organization the newsgroup population has. Apparently most of these views are as valid as any other. These views seem to represent various facets of the reality of whatever degree of organization the newsgroup population has acquired in the course of "growing like Topsy", as it has done, and continues to do. In about a half dozen cases people have constructed lists of the names, sometimes with very brief descriptions, of newsgroups in parts of the overall population that appear to categorize the popula or the regional categories can be extremely ambiguous. MODERATED OR NOT: This criterion concerns whether or not a newsgroup is moderated. In a moderated newsgroup, messages intended for posting on the bulletin board are e-mailed first to a certain site signer. Some groups may legitimately be assigned to more than one category. E.g., a group in the subscription category can unquestionably be also in any of the other three focus categories, and in some cases the assignment of a group to either the culturalganizations. o- Regional - of interest to specific geographical areas of the world. o- Subscription - for which an ISP must pay a fee to carry. Among these categories, the assignments are strongly subject to the personal perspective of the ass classification are: o- Cultural - devoted to specific cultural groups of the world's peoples , e.g., german (de.*), japanese (fj.*), australian (aus.*). o- Organizational - devoted to companies, universities, and other types of orthese groups. People who reserve the name USENET for the mainstream newsgroups call the alternate groups non-USENET groups. FOCUS OF EMPHASIS: This criterion concerns the large scale thread running through a set of newsgroups. The main categories in thiis practice helps to preserve the freedom of people who do use such a group to do and say whatever they desire in the group. These groups are universally called "alternate" or "alt" groups, though the term "alt.*" is also used for one specific sub-set of edge thereof necessary to establish a group. These groups are not necessarily acceptable to everyone in the world-wide Internet community. Therefore convention dictates that these groups not be provided to ISP sites unless they are explicitly requested. Thervice Provider (ISP) computers by which all newsgroups can be electronically distributed world-wide. All the other newsgroups have been established by anyone who had the technical ability to establish it, i.e., who had the hardware and software and knowlimitations of being acceptable to a wide audience of users. These groups are called "mainstream" or "traditional" groups, and some people reserve the name USENET for these groups. The term Usenet is also used more generally for the collection of Internet S least one tenth of the total were voted into existence by users after a formal and somewhat rigorous discussion period. A minimum of a 2/3rds majority of a minimum of 300 total voters is required. These groups therefore have both the advantages and lm. They are described in the sections below. COMMUNITY CONSENSUS: This criterion concerns the degree of consensus about the content and procedures of the newsgroup which is reached among the Internet community of users before the group is established. Atmplemented? o- Archived or Not - are the messages preserved after they run off the filled bulletin board? These criteria are completely independent of each other, so any given newsgroup can be viewed as being charaterized by any combination of thenity Consensus - has agreement been established among the worldwide community on a group's content and procedures? o- Focus of Emphasis - what is the large scale common thread? o- Moderated or Not - are the agreed content and procedures ition according to various criteria. These categories address the populations from various viewpoints, so the several lists provide a vague matrix for considering the newsgroups. The criteria representing the four main viewpoints are as follows: o- Commuor person designated as the moderator. The moderator is responsible for posting the messages after assuring that all those posted are consistent with the established content and procedures of the newsgroup, and that they are composed in such a manner as to contribute to a well organized, information-packed newsgroup. The degree and nature of this moderation varies immensely, depending on the personality and motivation of the individual moderators. ARCHIVED OR NOT: This criterion concerns whether or not thpatience and fortitude, or perhaps an adequate text editor. ***** The second largest listing of newsgroup names, and the largest of group descriptions, this compiler has located is identified below with its pasted file description: TCS FTS 6 00170 0 Feb 95.
